Urartu Slot Review
Obviously, we're all familiar with the ancient kingdom of Urartu (Kingdom of Van), but I'll give you a few refresher facts anyway. I'm just messing with you – I had no idea what it was either!! It turns out Urartu was an Iron Age kingdom located in Armenia. Thought to have been referred to as Ararat in biblical times, this empire rose to prominence in mid 9th century BC but slowly declined until being vanquished in 6th century BC. It's remained a kingdom of mystery with very little revealed over the ensuing millennia. But, seeing as though I love my trivia (small things amuse small minds I'm told), here are a few interesting facts:
The capital was a rock fortress called Tushpa.
As they conquered, they assimilated nations and religions (For all you trekkies – they were basically ancient “Borgs”)
The night of their final defeat, citizens of Urartu were held siege, and the city was set aflame.
Their architecture and ornaments used stone far more than any other surrounding cultures.
To this day, their existence is still shrouded in far more mystery than other civilizations of the same era.
Now that you're equipped for that Pub Quiz, let's move on to chat about the actual game! Urartu is a visually captivating video slot by Endorphina which is designed to work on any device you choose. So, anytime, anywhere, with a click of a button, you can be transported back in time to Urartu. (OK – you gotta use your imagination here a bit too people! Work with me!) Seriously though – this slot is steeped in atmosphere, and while most of what we think Urartu was like is guesswork, it feels pretty damn accurate.
Urartu is a high volatility 5 reel and 10 payline slot. The authentic and evocative symbols are set against a stone background and even the 9-Ace icons look etched and worn. The rest of the standard symbols are a king, queen, 2 religious statues and a helmet. A mountain is the wild and can substitute for everything except the scatter, which is a circular spiral.
With a bit more effort the controls could have been designed to mesh in better with their surrounds. Nonetheless, they aren't an eyesore and are extremely functional. Up top is the Credit display while down below is everything else needed: Bet, Menu (including Paytable and Advanced Autoplay Options), Total Bet, Autoplay, Spin and Lines. There's no Turbospin, but don't we all need a bit of a slower pace nowadays?
After each winning spin in regular play a “Take Risk” option is offered, where you can double your profits with a high card draw against the dealer
3 scatters anywhere activates 15 retriggerable Free Spins during which all wins are multiplied by 3.
If any wilds substitute to form part of a winning payline, those winnings are doubled!
The Maximum win in Urartu is 900 000 coins. Easily enough for a holiday trip to visit the Urartu ruins!
There's an impressive sharpness to the graphics which give them a vivid realism. Musically this slot scores a 10 outta 10 with some distinctly atmospheric ancient beats. The sound effects are a somewhat jarring mixture of slot stables and stirring sounds which fit the theme. Performance wise I had one small issue with the default screen alternating to the mobile version on Linux. Otherwise, performance was perfect on all platforms.
An immersive slot still has to have some attractive player rewards to keep us returning, Urartu is a pretty straightforward offering with a strong theme and not tons of features. The features that are present though are very enticing. To be honest, sometimes getting a slew of retriggerable Free Spins with multipliers is all you need on a bad day!
